Johnstown Chapter Makes the News!
BY SHAWN PIATEK spiatek@tribdem.com

With its one-year anniversary looming next month, the Association of Information Technology Professionals, AITP Johnstown Chapter is pretty pleased with its progress to date.

The group, which provides networking and educational opportunities for information technology professionals here, now has 23 members.

Group President Matt Hoffman said he was surprised by the reception the organization received.

"When I moved here from Pittsburgh seven years ago, I saw the amount of technology companies located here and thought a chapter would be a good fit here," said Hoffman, who noted that his father is president of AITP's Pittsburgh chapter.

"The response was actually better than I anticipated. We needed nine to formally start a chapter, but we got 20 right off the bat."

The group meets monthly, enjoys a meal and some social interaction and then takes in a presentation on some aspect of the IT profession. Topics range widely within the field, Hoffman said, and the group has viewed presentations by professionals from local organizations such as CTC and JARI to global companies such as IBM and Microsoft.

The group currently is looking to bolster its numbers. Hoffman said AITP Johnstown is holding a membership drive in May, offering $25 off the $140 annual membership fee. Memberships for students cost $35 a year.

"It offers a great networking opportunity for people in the same profession from different organizations to get to know one another," Hoffman said. "It also presents a huge opportunity for IT students at the local colleges to make connections with professionals in our area."
